The archipelago of the Eole Islands is located in the southern Tirreno Sea, North of Sicily. It is composed of 10 islands, but only seven of them are populated: Lipari, Salina, Vulcano, Alicudi, Filicudi, Panarea, Stromboli. All the Eole Islands are of volcanic origin.

Actually, the islands were just volcanoes emerged from the sea about 700 000 years ago. Wind and sunshine islands which have shaped the mind and identity of the islanders, identity that, in spite of the vicissitudes of the history and the changes imposed by the modern world, has survived with its customs and traditions.

Erice, a medieval town located at more than one thousand meters off the sea level, is probably the unique Sicilian town populated from the prehistory to our time. Myth, history, archeology are have been melting within its gigantic walls. The mountain's caverns were used as refuges by the men of the upper Paleolithic. One can mention the peregrination of Enea, represented by a monument erected at a few meters from the sea, towards North. During one millenium, Erice has been a reference for the Mediterranean people.
